How big is the India pharmaceutical and health care market? What is the trend observed? What are the challenges faced by the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry in India? What are your suggestions to overcome them, and how would the CPhI India 2014 play a role in it?
Now the tenth largest economy in the world and with global exports of around US$15 billion over the last 12 months, India is an innovation hub and a well-known focal point of the pharmaceutical industry and Mckinsey and Company forecast a staggering total value of US$45bn by 2020. Around 220 countries are sourcing pharma products from India, with the top 20 of India’s pharmaceutical companies contributing to almost two-thirds of the country’s total exports. These are exciting times for Indian pharmaceutical market as the global demand for Indian made drugs continues to rise, particularly with Western economies looking to further expand their use of generics.

Would like to re-iterate some of the key industry observations shared by our esteemed Jury for the India Pharma Awards 2014, during a recent jury meet. The Indian pharmaceutical sector is clearly growing, significantly contributing to the Indian economy and putting us on the global map. The sector is redefining itself, moving to ‘next practices’ from ‘best practices’,  and some of the entries for the award clearly reflect this. India is constantly seeking to match and surpass western quality standards while maintaining lower manufacturing costs. There will be a strong thrust in the manufacturing arena in line with the national priority of ‘Make in India’.

Another key challenge faced by the industry is to reclaim the enviable reputation it had earned, which has unfortunately got tarnished. However, the industry recognizes the need of building quality culture and shunning complacency. Also, organisations are increasingly focusing on building the 3 Ps - People , Planet and Profit and have started recruiting  Chief Sustainability Officers to give them a competitive edge.

CPhI 2014 will thus help provide a good insight into initiatives such as these in this area. The event will also elevate India as the global pharmaceutical destination by showcasing the unique positioning of the Indian pharma market and provide an optimum investment platform amidst its global counterparts.
