BNCP hosts national conference on 'Drug Discovery and Drug Targeting in Metabolic Diseases'

Dr. Bhanuben Nanavati College of Pharmacy (BNCP), Mumbai organised a two-day national conference on 'Drug Discovery and Drug Targeting in Metabolic Diseases' from December 22 to 23, 2014, in Mumbai. Eminent academicians and scientific personalities from across the country participated in the event.

There were more than 120 registered participants for the event. Besides, there were 16 oral presentations and 99 poster presentation. The chief guest of the event was Dr. Nilima Kshrisagar, Dean ESI PGIMSR MGM Hospital and Dr. Ritabelle Fernandes, Asst Professor, Department of Geriatric Medicine, University of Hawaii was the Guest of Honor.

Dr. Mayur Yergeri, Principal, BNCP in his inauguration speech thanked Dr. Nilima Kshrisagar and Dr. Ritabelle Fernandes for gracing the event He thanked DBT, ICMR, Agilent Technologies, Academy for Chemical Excellence (ACE) , Aptar Pharma, Themic Medicare, Electrolab India Pvt Ltd, Asolution, Rajesh Chemical, Innovate Biolife Pvt Ltd for sponsoring the event that had taken shape today after ample of planning spread over several months.

The chief guest Dr. Nilima Kshrisagar in her opening remarks said that “Metabolic disease is a very large area of medical need. In my wide span of career, I had witnessed and also being a part of vital drug formulations for metabolic diseases. The drugs that are common now, did not exist some decades backs since the spread of diseases for eg. malaria was not as widespread as it is now. Hence, robust efforts towards discovering new drug should always be there.”

Dr. Ritabelle who is presently doing research on diabetic disease and Parkinson trying to educate the right diet and lifestyle to keep the disease at the bay for geriatric patients, said that “New research and drugs have to keep evolving and upgrading in accordance with the needs of the times.”

Dr.Parthasarthi Gurumurthey, Dean, Faculty of Pharmacy, JSS, University, Mysore, Dr. P V Bharatam, Professor, Med Chem Division, NIPER, Mohali., Dr. M. S Nagarsenkar, Professor, Bombay college of Pharmacy, Dr.Mariam Degani, Professor, ICT, Mumbai ,Dr.Krishan Kalliappan, Professor, IIT, Mumbai were the speakers in the conference.
