Professors of Savitribai Phule Pune & Hopkins universities co-author book on Integrative Approaches for Health

Savitribai Phule Pune University and Hopkins University professors have co-authored a book on 'Integrative Approaches for Health: Biomedical research, Ayurveda and Yoga' published by Academic Press, an Imprint of Elsevier.

The first of the three authors is Prof Bhushan Patwardhan, Professor & Director, Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences, Savitribai Phule Pune University.

The second author is Dr Gururaj Mutalik, Former, Dean and Professor of Medicine, Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Medical College, Pune, Postdoctoral fellow in human genetics at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore and former director, World Health Organization of the United Nations in New York.

 The third author is Dr. Girish Tillu, Vaidya Scientist Fellow, Interdisciplinary, School of Health Sciences, Savitribai Phule Pune University.

The book is scheduled for release on May 28, 2015 at the PUMBA Auditorium in Savitribai Phule Pune University. The chief guest will be Dr R A Mashelkar, National Research Professor. Special guests will be Dr. Ashok Vaidya, Director, Kasturba Health Society, Medical Research Center, Mumbai, Dr Vijay Bhatkar, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT-Delhi. Also present would be Dr Arun Nigavekar, Former Chairman, UGC, Dr Shivajirao Kadam, Vice Chancellor, BVDU, Pune and Dr P D Patil, Founder President, DPU, Pune.

The 382-page book on Integrative Approaches for Health: Biomedical Research, Ayurveda and Yoga is harmonious confluence of ancient and modern concepts, historical perspectives, philosophical underpinnings and a relevant review of literature supported by worldwide case studies.

It provides a critical analysis of ancient wisdom, pointing to potential areas for future research, which provide food for thought for public debate on integrative health care for the twenty-first century. Besides, it explains Ayurveda knowledge, and its relevance to drug discovery, nutrition, genomics, epigenetics, regenerative biology, longevity and personalized medicine. It also shares Yoga knowledge insights, and explains its relevance to body–mind complex relationships, psychology, neurobiology, immune-endocrinology, bioenergetics, consciousness, and cognitive sciences. Further, it offers illustrations and logic diagrams for enhanced understanding of the concepts presented.
