The state government of Telangana is planning to incorporate specialist doctors with M.D Hospital Administration degree for improving the healthcare delivery in the state of Telangana. The doctors with PG degree in hospital administration (M.D.) after MBBS can be employed for district hospitals and all the teaching hospitals.
They can also be offered the position of civil surgeon administrators after 3 years of experience in a teaching hospital as asst civil surgeon administrator and also considered for the position of hospital medical superintendents.
Prof Dr Satyanarayana, hospital administrator and medical superintendent at NIMS and former president of Association of Health and Hospital Administrators (AHHA), said “They can be the full time administrators, better trained and competent to take care of all issues pertaining to any section of the hospital without any clinical duties. The present practice of appointing clinicians as superintendents of hospitals is based only on precedence whereas almost every committee on improving the management of hospitals at national level or state level has recommended the appointment of qualified doctor administrators for the position of medical superintendent.”
He further added “The doctors trained in the MHA/MD Hospital Administration are working in the national and international institutes and their contribution is being appreciated by the government of India.
We request the government to utilise the persons qualified in M D, hospital administration as hospital administrators in health care delivery from district hospital level and above; The persons who possess masters in health management (non-clinical personnel) should be utilised in health care delivery below district hospitals i.e. sub-centers to area hospitals.
This will definitely benefit the development of health care services and provide affordable and quality health care services to all citizens in the state of Telangana.”
At present, the M D hospital administration course pursued by the M B B S graduates is available in Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences, Punjagutta, Hyderabad; Kamineni Institute of Medical Sciences, Narketpally; and Government Medical College, Nizamabad established recently also has department of hospital administration in Telangana.
Institutes offering M D hospital administration course outside Telangana are All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi; Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh; Armed Forces Medical College, Pune; Kasturba Medical College, Manipal; Vydehi Institute Of Medical Sciences & Research Centre, Bengaluru; Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Srinagar; Narayana Medical College, Nellore, Andhra Pradesh.
