MUHS starts Modern Pharmacology course for registered homoeopathic practitioners in Maharashtra

The government of Maharashtra has approved the 'Modern Pharmacology', a certificate course, for the registered homoeopathic practitioners in the state. The academic council of Maharashtra University of Health Science (MUHS) has sanctioned to start the course for academic year 2015-2016. Initially the course will be conducted only in the government colleges of Maharashtra with 50 intake capacity of each college.

The course aims to enable the homoeopathic practitioners to prevent or treat common ailments in the state of Maharashtra with homoeopathic medicine with the prescription of allopathic medicine; and refer the patients which are beyond their competency to other competent registered medical practitioners.

The homoeopathic practitioners, who are registered with Maharashtra Council of Homoeopathy, are only eligible for the course. At the end of the course, the homoeopathic practitioners will be able to provide primary care for upper and lower respiratory infections without dangerous signs, fever less than a week with no localising sign and fever with rash, diarrhoea with moderate or mild dehydration, abdominal pain with mild urinary infection, intestinal helminthiasis- worm, sting and bites including snake bites without envenomation sign, syndromic approach to STDs, common skin infections and allergies skin condition, anaemia, conjunctivitis, refractory error, electrocution, drowning and lightning strikes, tooth ache and gum infections.

They can also counsel and refer patients to a facility in case of complications or non responsive to primary care. They can provide treatments, follow-up and rehabilitation for patients discharged from facilities as a continuum. They can also perform eye examination, provide oxygen, maintain patients records, X- ray reading and reporting, clean and dressing wound and burns, etc.

The syllabus of Modern Pharmacology course includes subjects like general pharmacology, systematic pharmacology-I, systematic pharmacology-II and practical pharmacology. General pharmacology includes introduction, definition and scope of pharmacology; drug absorption, drug distribution; drug biotransformation; drug excretion; pharmacodynamics; adverse drug reaction; drug combination and drug development. Systematic pharmacology-I includes autonomic nervous system; cardiovascular system; and central nervous system. Systematic pharmacology-II includes chemothereapy, hormones and miscellaneous.

The controller of examinations will issue the certificate after the university declares the candidates as successfully pass. The registration of certificate course in Modern Pharmacology for the registered homoeopathic practitioners shall be done with Maharashtra Medical Council.
