A team of doctors at American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Hyderabad have successfully performed a bone cancer surgery and reimplanted hand of an 18-year-old patient for the first time in Telangana.

Dr. Kishore Bhavanam Reddy, a musculoskeletal surgical oncologists at American Oncology Institute, led a team of doctors to perform a 6-hour reimplantation surgery to avoid the amputation of the hand of an 18-year-old patient. “This surgery has given us a chance to achieve a milestone in the history of American Oncology Institute. We could successfully remove the cancerous part of distal forearm and reimplant the hand of the patient,” says Dr. Kishore.

Since inception, AOI has been a leader in cancer care. The hospital is renowned for its research in cancer care and has equipped with world’s most advanced technology to ensure best of the best treatment facilities for the cancer patients.

Hospital sources revealed that a patient from Adilabad district of Telangana state had been suffering from bone cancer in his wrist area since past 6 months. In medical terminology this type of cancer is known as ‘Leiomyosarcoma’. According to the doctor, such malignant tumours are rare in the hand and wrist area and they can be managed primarily through surgical procedures.

As the patient, who is a student, was suggested amputation of the hand by doctors in other hospitals, he approached AOI and Dr. Kishore too his case on priority and performed the complicated surgery to cure his cancer without amputating the hand.

Referring to the surgery, Dr. Kishore Bhavanam Reddy said, “In most of the cancer cases such as this one, the lack of awareness and knowledge leads to severity in the tumour. It was a ‘Leiomyosarcoma’ 10 centimetre above the wrist. Our primary challenge was to restore his limb with full functionality. We performed wide excision of distal forearm with reimplantation of the hand to the remnant forearm.”

According to the doctors, the reimplantation surgery took a marathon of 6 hours and the patient was discharged from hospital after 5 days of the surgery. The patient is recovering well and is expected to get back to his normal life in next 6 weeks.

Apart from Dr. Kishore, Dr. Himanshu, orthopedic surgeon and Dr. Ravi Kumar, anaesthelogist were among the operating team of this surgery.
