As part of its clinician skill enhancement objective, Johnson & Johnson (J&J) India has partnered with Joslin Diabetes Center - an affiliate of Harvard Medical School - to launch a flagship online course on diabetes management through its J&J Diabetes Institute. J&J Medical India also provides educational grant for a Certificate Course in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (CCGDM) conceived by PHFI in partnership with Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Education Academy (DMDEA), Chennai.
In the recently concluded FICCI Healthcare Excellence Award 2015, this initiative has won an award under the category of healthcare professionals skill development. Meanwhile, In order to help surgeons and healthcare professionals in India to keep abreast of the emerging trends in medical and surgical care, J&J's Ethicon Institute of Surgical Education (EISE) established in 1993 has trained over 130,000 healthcare practitioners across various specialties in India.
The state-of-the-art institute imparts `hands-on’ training to budding and practicing surgeons, gynecologists and paramedical staff with real life simulated situations to facilitate quality learning. The institute plans to offer transformational curriculums to help healthcare professionals in India to upgrade their skills.
J&J Medical India was also conferred the Clinician Skill Enhancement Company of the Year Award at the recently hosted 7th Annual India Healthcare Excellence Awards 2015organised by Frost & Sullivan in Mumbai.
India has about 800,000 physicians with only 0.6 physicians per 1000 population. Moreover, the demand for well-trained physicians in India far outstrips the current supply especially as the country’s health challenges move from acute, communicable diseases to lifestyle related diseases.
In 2013, a telementoring device was inducted by J&J Medical Professional Education department to permeate medical education from centre of excellence to healthcare professionals across different parts of the country. Using this technology, centre of excellence hospitals were connected with remote hospitals online not only in metro cities but also in tier I and tier II cities of India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and many tele-mentoring programmes were conducted for healthcare professionals.
The programme bridged the gap among ORs and helped the surgical fraternity to develop an intra-operative interaction with the thought leaders and technical experts. To date, more than 1000 surgeons and gynecologists have undergone the tele-mentoring training programmes.
