Andhra Pradesh Drugs Control Administration (APDCA) is in the process of providing self-appraisal forms to all the registered blood banks in the state. The appraisal form has been prepared keeping in mind all mandatory requirements for running a blood bank. It also strictly adheres to the directives given by the High Court in a related judgement recently. The compliance of all the requirements will automatically ensure the purity of the blood in accordance to the HC judgement, it is learnt. Informing this to Pharmabiz.com, Alok Srivastava, I G, said that the effective functioning of blood banks has become essential to restrict the spread of AIDS also. The department envisages strict follow-up measures also. "We have asked the blood banks to send monthly reports in the prescribed formats. The department will analyse these reports and also conduct inspections to verify the claims." he said. There are 144 registered blood banks in the state. The practice of issuing self-appraisal forms was extended to the blood banks after it was introduced in the pharmaceutical companies and then, the drug trade / sales sector. It is known that the encouraging results from these initiatives prompted the department to extend it to the blood bank sector also. Such initiatives are meant to build up confidence in the blood bank sector and also help develop a meaningful interaction. Here the role of the drug inspectors is limited to verifying and certifying the claims voluntarily made by the blood banks.
