Apollo Specialty Hospitals, Jayanagar in Bengaluru has adopted a massive preventive measure strategy to keep osteoporosis at bay. While observing World Osteoporosis Day on October 20, a workshop was organised to raise awareness on various causes and preventive measures.

The workshop was attended by 25 people from the neighbourhood in and around Jayanagar, across demographics. Dr. Radhika Nair, senior consultant, endocrinology informed about types of osteoporosis and causes.

Dr. Nair pointed that in the past social and religious activities kept elderly people engaged in physical activities which helped them stay healthy. But today’s lifestyle is a sorry state of affairs where the patients have to be prescribed to walk.

Other doctors from across specializations including physiotherapy and orthopaedics attended the workshop and interacted with the attendees.

“It is equally important to ensure that homes have anti-skid floors and making living space clutter free. There is need for a calcium rich diet and engaging in regular physical activities to keep osteoporosis at bay,” said Dr. Maitree, consultant, nuclear medicine, Apollo Hospitals.

Dr. Sandhya Singh, dietician, Apollo Hospitals provided quick tips for calcium rich daily diets. An in-house fitness expert along with physiotherapist also interacted with the audience and suggested some regular daily exercises to prevent the disease.
