Kiran Medical Systems, a division of Trivitron Healthcare, a market leader in radiation protective products in the country, sees that India is on par with global markets in use of basic radiation protection aprons during procedures involving X-rays, etc.

The company exports to 165 countries. We are working closely with leading medical institutions, regulatory bodies and key opinion leaders to educate healthcare professionals on the deterministic and stochastic effects of radiation exposure. We are highlighting the importance of radiation protection products for the safety of both patients and medical professionals, Dr Satyaki Banerjee, president, Kiran Medical Systems told Pharmabiz in an email interaction.

“However a lot needs to be done to increase awareness on the importance of use of radiation protection gloves, eye wear and shields during interventional procedures to catch up with radiation protection practices followed in Europe, Japan and US,” noted Banerjee.

“We have been offering some of the world’s finest radiation protection products for over 30 years. “Our range includes sterile lead-free radiation protection gloves, radiation protection apparels in a choice of 3 core materials: Lead, Low Lead and Zero Lead, besides computed tomography shields, scatter radiation protection sterile shields, and radiation protection eye wear. A full body Radiation Protection Barrier Shield is likely to be introduced in July 2016,” he added.

Stating that Kiran radiation protection products are considered amongst the finest globally, Dr. Banerjee said that all leading hospitals and medical professionals vouch for fail-safe protection against scattered radiation.

India is not just a market for Kiran radiation products but is also a manufacturing base. The company has an advanced facility at Navi Mumbai approved by leading regulatory agencies including AERB, and US FDA. The quality systems are assessed and certified to ISO 9001: 2008 and ISO 13485: 2003/EN ISO 13485: 2013 standards. The products conform norms of CE as per European Council’s Medical Device Directive (MDD) and Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) directive.

The global market size for radiation protection for apparels is one million units and gloves is 0.75 million units. Kiran has been the frontrunner globally in terms of innovation. While it competes with companies in Europe, Japan and US, it is leading the way in terms of product differentiation. “For instance, our sterile radiation protection gloves are considered to be the most advanced globally in terms of uniformity of radiation protection and tactile sensitivity at the finger tips providing unprecedented control and grip on guide wires to surgeons during interventional procedures. On similar lines our apparels are designed keeping in mind functional aspects like ease of body movements during surgical procedures, he said.
