Hyderabad based Landmark Hospital has introduced a new generation knee prosthesis called ‘Bi-cruciate stabilizer (BCS) Knee Prosthesis’ designed to perform functions exactly as that of a normal knee.
Designed by Dr Ronald Singer of USA, a team of doctors at Landmark Hospital in Hyderabad introduced this new arthritis treatment procedure and performed more than 40 successful surgeries using this implant. “Unlike the usual implants used in total knee replacement (TKR) treatment surgeries, we are using a well designed BCS knee prosthesis which will recreate the normal knee functioning with the same strength and mobility. The implant material is wear resistant and durable for longer period. It is made up of Oxinium and XLPE and it is costly,” says Dr Sudhir, chief orthopaedic and joint replacement surgeon of Landmark Hospital.
Though there are many good knee replacement implants available in India providing much better knee pain relief, majority of them just do the joint movement functioning and do have the flexibility of performing the movements as similar to normal joints. Traditionally all the existing designs of TKR prosthesis were based on poor understanding of the knee biomechanics and they are designed as simple hinge joints without recreating the complex kinematics of natural knee. This results in less bending of the knee, some pain and weakness, easy tiredness of the knee muscles and the inability to do high demand activities like sports, running, carrying heavy objects etc.
To overcome these problems, team of doctors at Landmark Hospital have introduced BCS knee prosthesis which is designed and engineered to give 100 per cent relief from knee joint pains and at the same time offering normal knee like functioning with much better durability and strength. “This is a new generation knee prosthesis which has been engineered through physiological matching technology using ‘life modeller’ and unmatched function, motion and durability. It is designed in such a way that it matches the natural knee closest in kinematics (movements and stability) and VERILAST technology materials have been used. Thus patients feel that it is very much like a natural knee, strength and stability are very much like normal knee so they are able to high demand activities. As it completely mimics the natural kinematics of the normal knee deep flexion including squatting is possible,” informed Dr Sudhir.
At present the overall cost of the surgery using this uniquely designed implant is set to be Rs.3 lakhs at Landmark Hospital.
