While he underwent a grilling treatment procedure, the constant radiation damaged his soft palate with adjoining structures that play an important role in speech, swallowing, and breathing. The patient’s speech was severely distorted. He had difficulty in swallowing food and everything he drank would regurgitate through his nose. Just when he and his family started to lose hope, the patient was brought to Vatsalya Centre for Oral Health. A removable Maxillofacial Prosthesis was given to him to mechanically close his defect. This not just improved his speech and allowed him to swallow but also contributed to his social well-being, he added.
The centre that focuses on Special Needs Dentistry had recently launched Maxillofacial Prosthetic treatment in their special care center. Dr. Bharadwaj said that this facility was armed with a dedicated team of Maxillofacial Prosthodontists, Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons, paediatric dentists and general dentists committed to rehabilitation and care for special needs clients.
