1. SMART (Surgical Multinational Asian Registry in Thrombosis): SMART is an International, multicentre observational study of a cohort consecutive Asian patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery. The objectives of SMART are to describe the characteristics of Asian patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery, i.e. total hip or knee replacement & hip surgery and to estimate the incidence & clinical pattern of the VTE (Venous-thromboembolism) disease in patients not receiving pharmacological prophylaxis. In Asia 11 countries (China, Hong Kong, India, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Pakistan & Bangladesh), have been registered in approximately 25 to 50 centres. The global number of patients enrolled has exceeded the target number of the 2400 patients. Bangladesh has started patient enrolment from November 2001 and successfully exceeded the target number of 160 patients. Enrolment of total 164 patients completed on June 20, 2002. The study found one (1) case of DVT in hip fracture patients, which was established by colour doppler study.

This is the shorter version of original GRACE study. National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) is the centre of this study in Bangladesh. The Director of this Institute, Prof M Nazrul Islam is the Investigator of the study. Till Nov. 30, 2002 fifty seven (57) patients have been enrolled in this study.

Twenty years ago, many experts claimed that family planning and child survival interventions would face insurmoun-table obstacles in Bangladesh because of the nation''s conservative culture and low standard of living. Despite serious challenges along the way, Bangladesh has achieved impressive reductions in fertility and in infant and child mortality over the past three decades.
Bangladesh has made impressive gains in indicators of population and child health. Among these are:
A decline in the total fertility rate from 7 births per woman in the mid-1970s to 3.3 in 1999-2000.
An increase in the contraceptive prevalence rate from 8% in the mid-1970s to 54% in 1999-2000.
A decline in infant mortality rates from 150/1,000 live births in the mid-1970s to 66/1,000 in 1999-2000. A reduction in mortality for children under five years of age from about 250/1,000 in the mid-1970s to 94/1,000 in 1999-2000. u
