The pharmaceutical industry, one of the most profitable industries in the United States, plays a significant role in the world pharmaceutical industry as well.
The US is the world’s largest market for pharmaceuticals and the world leader in biopharmaceutical research. The US firms conduct 80 per cent of the world’s research and development in biotechnology and hold the intellectual property rights to most new medicines.
The latest report on the US healthcare industry forecasts the country’s pharmaceutical market value to climb from $359 billion in 2012 to $476 billion in 2020, increasing by 33 per cent over the eight year period.
The expansion of the insured population, prompted by the introduction of Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), will play a key role in driving US pharmaceutical market revenue up by a third by the end of the decade, the report adds.
With the PPACA (commonly known as Obamacare) extending health insurance to 32 million more Americans by 2016, patient pools and the demand for drug therapy are expected to increase significantly, driving up healthcare expenditure and pharmaceutical revenue as a result.
Like many other countries around the world, the US is expected to experience growth in its elderly population, climbing from a 19 per cent share of all Americans in 2012 to more than 22 per cent by 2020. The expansion of the 60 and over age demographic is another factor that will inevitably drive the US pharmaceuticals industry, owing to the corresponding increase in healthcare demand.
Reflecting the dynamic changes taking place in the US pharma industry , the International Pharmaceutical Expo (INTERPHEX), the leading annual trade event dedicated to the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industry, will be taking place from March 18-20 at the Javits Center in New York City.
INTERPHEX is the single source for complete biopharmaceutical and pharmaceutical manufacturing solutions to process all dosage forms for life-enhancing drugs..INTERPHEX addresses technology solutions and education for all aspects of drug manufacturing, from process development through delivery to market.
This year, INTERPHEX and the Parenteral Drug Association (PDA) has announced a three-year Sponsorship Agreement. This sponsorship aligns the objectives of both organizations to service key needs of the global pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industry by driving innovation and advancement.
Beyond the 650 plus vendors and new technology at this year’s event, there will be unrivalled opportunities for knowledge, interaction, and professional growth, according to the organizers of the event.
INTERPHEX serves as a strong platform for decision-makers in the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical manufacturing community, bringing together over 12,000 industry professionals to learn, network and source from the latest technology, equipment, education and services.
PDA is the premier global provider of science, technology and regulatory information and education for the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industry. Its mission is to develop scientifically sound, practical technical information and resources to advance science and regulation for the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industry through the expertise of its more than 9,500 global members.

INTERPHEX 2013
INTERPHEX 2013 was held April 23-25, 2013 at the Javits Center. With over 12,000 industry professionals present, show attendees numbered at over 8,100, a remarkable 20 per cent increase over the previous year’s show. This unique opportunity for industry experts to connect with vendors, suppliers and product champions, while receiving the latest information on tools, methodologies and regulatory knowledge, made INTERPHEX 2013 an especially compelling event.
Congressman Bill Cassidy M.D.’s keynote presentation, “Policy Recommendations for Improving Patient Access to Drugs in Shortage”, offered potential improvements to the current reimbursement system to avoid future drug shortages. An additional widely attended keynote session entitled “Reorganizing for the Future: Succeeding in the New Pharmaceutical Industry” featured Rajesh Nair, M.D., President of Indegene.
Anticipation was at an all-time high over new technologies and featured products with a vast array of equipment and demonstrations on the Show Floor, far more than in previous years. Buyers had the opportunity to connect and network with new suppliers displaying the latest technologies.
Rounding out INTERPHEX’s educational component were a series of Exhibit Hall Technology Floor Tours, presented by IPS, representing OSD technologies, advanced aseptic technologies, biomanufacturing technologies and modular construction technologies. The tours offered critical insights followed by a walking tour to select vendors (including Bosch Packaging Technology, EMD Millipore Corp, Fette Compacting America, Inc, The Fitzpatrick Company, GEA Process Engineering, GE Healthcare, IMA Life North America, LB Bohle LLC, Pall Life Sciences, SKAN US and more) to showcase the latest technology and equipment on the show floor.
“We’re thrilled with the signs of industry optimism that were evident at this year’s INTERPHEX. We saw an increased demand for product sourcing with a higher number of open industry projects fuelling a surge in attendance, “ rhapsodised Bob Stewart, Industry Vice President, INTERPHEX Events.
