Archer Daniels Midland Company has been awarded its fifth and sixth patents in a series of breakthrough patents that utilize concentrated isoflavones in combination with other plant-derived phytochemicals. These patents cover plant-derived compositions enriched with at least two phytochemicals from a group consisting of isoflavones, lignans, saponins, catechins and phenolic acids that can be used for the treatment of alcoholism and the treatment of neurological symptoms.

"These additional patents illustrate our work with soy-derived isoflavones in combination with saponins and other concentrated phytochemicals which may prove useful in the treatment of alcohol dependency and in the treatment of neurological symptoms," stated Tony DeLio, Vice President of Marketing and External Affairs. "In addition, isoflavones are commonly utilized in dietary supplements or added to certain foods to provide functional benefits." ADM markets isoflavones under the brand name Novasoy.

U.S. Patent No. 6,399,072 describes "Method of Preparing and Using Isoflavones for the Treatment of Alcoholism." This patent covers a composition that is administered to provide treatment for alcohol dependency.

U.S. Patent No. 6,391,310 describes "Method of Preparing and Using Isoflavones for the Treatment of Neurological Symptoms." This patent covers a composition administered to provide treatment for mental conditions and nerve problems, especially neurological symptoms, immunological symptoms, migraine headaches, inflammation and dementia.
