AIPS to organise seminar on IP valuation in Mumbai
Our Bureau, Mumbai | Thursday, July 6, 2006, 08:00 Hrs  [IST]

AIPS is organising a one-day seminar on 'valuation of intellectual property' on August 18, 2006 at its premises in Mumbai. In today's knowledge-based economy, intellectual assets such as intellectual property (IP), human capital and organisational capabilities play a vital role in business performance and economic growth. This is particularly evident in the case of IP. As patents are exploited more strategically and managed as an asset, proper assessment of their value is necessary. Firm managers value patents when deciding whether or not to file/renew patent applications, when calculating royalties for patent licensing contracts, when estimating the value of a possible merger or acquisition, and when estimating their own corporate value.

Any business decision involving sale or purchase of intangible assets/IPRs, licensing of IPRs, royalty fixation, mergers and acquisitions, setting up of JVs or strategic partnerships, financing options, settling of disputes etc entails a careful consideration of the value of the related IPRs. It, therefore, becomes important to look at how such valuations can be arrived at. This one-day seminar being offered by AIPS will assist participants in this regard.

Faculty: Gordon Smith, chairman, AUS, Inc, New Jersey, USA, and a leading consultant on IP valuation and royalty fixation.

IP valuation goes beyond being merely an accounting operation. In the seminar, Gordon Smith will define the various issues that make valuation necessary and useful. Valuation principles and valuation methods (cost method, market method, income method) will be studied; Case study of a patent valuation will be made, and the economics of licensing, settling of royalties, etc. will be considered.
