US-based Allergan Inc, the global eye care major is applauded by ophthalmologists for its advanced technology, Sovereign Phacoemulsification System, which is the recipient of three major awards for its innovative design. The awards are the Medical Design Excellence Award, Industrial Design Excellence Award [IDEA], and ID Magazine's 45th Annual Design Review.

"In developing Sovereign approached the product design from a global point of view to ensure that we were addressing not only the clinical needs but also the functional needs of surgeons and nurses," said Paul Rockley, director marketing, Global Phaco Products. This has been a major success among ophthalmologists.

The Medical Design Excellence Award system with a silver medal for its innovative committee honoured Sovereign product design. The awards endorsed by Industrial Designers Society of America [IDSA], honour the outstanding achievement in design and engineering of medical products. The award was sponsored by the Canon Communications LLC, a leading publisher, professional conference organiser and the trade show producer of the medical equipment industry.

Systems received a gold award Sovereign from IDEA, which was co-sponsored by IDSA. IDEA recognises the design excellence to promote competitive advantages through design driven corporate strategy.

The I D Magazine Annual Design Review presented the Sovereign the design distinction award in equipment category and it judges entries on its excellence in graphic, industrial environment and furniture.

Among its unique design elements, a release from the Allergan Inc stated that features a cockpit style graphic interface that was created by Design Works USA, a BMW subsidiary, to present the surgical information in an easy to read mode and facilitate intuitive, split second responses. It features analog indicators of principal functions based on studies that show analog information and is read twice as fast as digital.

The novel phaco technology transforms cataract surgery integrating advanced fluidics technology and enhanced power modulations. Working with ophthalmologics from all over the world, to significantly reduce the risks Allergan Inc designed the Sovereign associated with Phacoemulsification. It is available to ophthalmologists worldwide.

System complements Allergan's existing line of The Sovereign Prestige and the AMO Diplomax Phacoemulsification products including AMO Systems offers a new option for surgeons.
