AMDL to set up healthcare division in Bangalore by October

The Bangalore-based Advanced Micronic Devices Limited [AMDL] which has been in the business of marketing healthcare products and information technology services will soon be setting up a subsidiary unit for its healthcare division. The healthcare subsidiary worth Rs. 24 crore will commence operations by October 2000, informed Vijaya Raghavan, managing director AMDL.

The company has been in the business of healthcare for two and half decades and concentrates on cardiology equipment and devices. According to Raghavan, the company does not compare itself with the high-end medical equipment manufacturer's like Siemens and Wipro GE but has its own niche dealing with a range of products for diagnostic, rehabilitation, resuscitation and therapeutic needs of the cardiac care requirements.

The healthcare devices that AMD deals with include stents, balloons & catheters for angioplast, angioplasty and angiography. There are also single & dual chamber heart pacemakers, AICD's and supporting instruments, temporary heart pacemakers, etc.

Among the healthcare equipment are electro-physiological systems, foetal monitoring systems, intra aortic balloon pumps, multi-parameter monitoring systems, IAB catheters, pulse oximeters, ETCO2 Monitors, Holter Analysis Systems, cardiac resuscitation systems, Stress Test Systems & Cathlab Instruments etc.

The total value of the cardiology equipment market is Rs. 500 crore and this includes high value systems like cathlabs, scanners, and imaging systems. But in the area where AMD operates is worth Rs. 100 crore and the company has 15- 20 percent of the market share, informs Raghavan.

The company has registered a turnover of Rs. 21 crore during the year ended March 2000 and has been growing at the rate of 15 to 20 percent, according to Raghavan. In the angioplasty and stress systems segment, AMDL has a 20 percent market share each. In the intra aortic balloon pumps, the company has bagged 90 percent of the business.

AMDL's principals are Fortune 500, technology oriented companies in the US: Guidant Corp, ACS Division, Medtronics, USA, Bard International, Corometrics Medical Systems, a GE-Marquette Co. Datascope Corp., Del Mar Avionics, USA, Zoll Medical Corp, Quintron Instruments Co. In the UK, it is Pacemakers Division APC Medical Ltd.

AMDL's customers include all major cardiology centers, super specialty hospitals, polyclinics and medical colleges in the country.

The company which commenced its operations in 1982 went public in1994, was founded by entrepreneurs who had extensive experience in Information Technology and Healthcare. The company's stocks are currently listed in Mumbai and Bangalore stock exchanges With the healthcare division set up as a separate entity, helps AMDL to give a better focus, informs Raghavan.
