The Hyderabad based Apollo Hospitals has spent about Rs. 1400 crores for expanding and starting 4 new hospitals across the country. As already Apollo is having its branches in all major cities, the hospital group has decided to further expand its base in the country and has started 4 new hospitals at Vizag in Andhra Pradesh (AP), Bangalore in Karnataka (KA), Mumbai in Maharashtra (MH) and Gauhati in Assam.

With this new expansion, the hospital group is planning to increase its bed count capacity to over 10,000 beds in the coming days. Launching its new business ‘Apollo Homecare’ in Hyderabad, Dr. C. Pratap Reddy, chairman of Apollo Hospitals said that the hospital group is planning to invest Rs. 150 crores to build a new hospital in Bangalore, while another Rs. 170 crores are expected to be spend for constructing 300 bedded hospital in Vizag of Andhra Pradesh.

A maximum of Rs.550 crores are spent on the upcoming new Apollo hospital in Mumbai. “There is a growing trend of diseases in the country. But India faces acute shortage of beds. We require a minimum of 1 lakh additional beds to overcome the growing healthcare demand in the country. In view of this we are planning to increase our bed count in the country. We are spending a huge amount on the new super specialty hospital in Mumbai. We procuring and installing advanced operation theaters and providing extensive healthcare facilities for serving cancer patients,” informed the chairman.

Apart from expansion in various states in the country, the Apollo group is also planning to expand its foray in the foreign countries. To this effect, the group has already identified 12 expansion projects in the various countries and is expected to partner with some of the leading hospitals in the western countries.

In addition to expansions, Apollo group is also looking to venture into new businesses to capture the domestic healthcare markets. As part of this exercise it has launched the ‘Apollo Homecare’ wing which is headed by Harshad Reddy, grandson of Dr. Prathap Reddy, as director of the new business.

According to Harshad Reddy, Apollo Homecare would provide home-based healthcare to the elderly, chronically ill patients, post-surgery recovery patients and home specialty care. “The Apollo homecare not only reaches to the patients at their homes but at the same time helps reduce the pressure of growing demand for beds in the hospitals. Post-operative care at home would release some of beds for others,” says Reddy.
