The public sector Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), Bhopal has surrendered a staggering 154 acres of land to the state government for the setting up of a medical institute on the lines of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

The project named Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia All India Institute of Medical Sciences will cost the public exchequer Rs.280 crore and would have the best doctors and facilities. A residential colony for the doctors and staff would also be developed on the premises of the institute.

Laying the foundation stone for the institute, deputy Prime Minister LK Advani has said that all out efforts are being made by the central government to bring world-class development within the reach of common people.

With the setting up of an institute of the class of AIIMS in Bhopal, referral medical services of the highest standard would become available to the people of Madhya Pradesh. At present, for these medical services, people of the state have to go to Delhi or Mumbai.

The institute to be established and run by the central government would have 100 seats for graduate level education. The admission would be through all India entrance examination. In addition, seats for post-graduate studies would also be available.

The central government would incur recurring expenditure of about Rs.70 crore per annum for the institute. The management and functioning of the AIIMS in Bhopal would be modeled after the AIIMS Delhi providing top class medical facilities to the poor.

The institute would have all departments pertaining to medical sciences including neurology, urology, nephrology, paediatrics, cardiology, orthopaedics, anaesthesiology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, biophysics, dermatology, endocrinology, haematology, medicine, microbiology, radio diagnosis, surgical disciplines and pharmacology.
