The Centre for Biotechnology (CBT) of the Anna University, Chennai, has developed laboratory-teaching kits to facilitate hands on training for biotechnology students in the country.

The university, which plans to introduce another 20 such kits within the next year, launched five teaching kits, last week. These fully indigenously developed kits are for plasmid extraction, chromosomal DNA extraction, restriction digestion, elution of DNA and PCR required for conducting molecular biology/genetic engineering experiments.

The kits, developed in accordance to global standards and subjected to scientific validation, will be offered at nominal prices to all the interested colleges offering biotechnology courses. The teaching kits were available in a ready to market package, designed in association with the Technology Business Incubator set up by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) at the CBT and Medox Biotech India, informed the sources.

The kits were developed by a team of scientists and molecular biologists at CBT, led by V.Murugesan, Assistant Professor, CBT. Anna University Vice-Chancellor E.Balaguruswami launched the product at a function in the university, held last week, said the sources.
