CCRYN to publish 19 research findings on therapeutic value of Yoga

The Central Council for Research in Yoga & Naturopathy (CCRYN) has decided to publish 19 significant research findings as documentary proof of the therapeutic value of yogic treatments. The first such research paper, on "coronary atherosclerosis reversal potential of yoga life style intervention" brought out by the department of cardiology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi would be ready this month.

The CCRYN intends to publish one research finding a month from now onwards, Dr B T Chidananda Murthy, director CCRYN, informed pharmabiz. The major attractions among the research works would be the project carried out by Swami Vivekananda Yoga Research Foundation Bangalore on "integrated approach of yoga therapy in the treatment of cancer". Similarly, the department of respiratory critical care and sleep medicine, Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi is ready with its evaluation on "the effect of various yogic practices on symptomatology and physiological parameters in the bronchial asthma". The research findings that are to come out from CCRYN include the ones carried out by Defence Institute of Physiology & Allied Sciences on coronary artery disease regression through life style changes and the effect of yogic practices on the physiological and anti-oxidant systems in man.

The completed research projects initiated by CCRYN and carried out by Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University are an evaluation of effect of some hatha yoga exercises on primary and secondary hypertension with special references to body immunity, evaluation of efficacy of Dhouti Kriya (gastro-intestinal dialysis) in comparison to other yogic and traditional methods of dialysis and purification with special reference to cellular and humoral immunity and role of vipassana meditation on attention, memory span and learning abilities among student population.

Influence of yoga in immune modulation and outcome of rheumatoid arthritis (Dept of Clinical Immunology, M S Ramaiah Medical Teaching Hospital, Bangalore), integrated approach of yoga therapy for stress related ailments (Vivekananda Kendra Yoga Research Foundation, Bangalore), understanding of neurodynamical complexities of meditative process from the EEG signals (National Institute of Mental Health & Neuro Sciences, Bangalore), study on effects of yoga on reproductive sexual health (Jeevan Rekha Parishad, Bhubaneshwar, Orissa), yoga for memory development among school children (Atma Darshan Sadhna Kendra, New Delhi), yogic management of stress related disorders with & without bio-feedback (Kaivalya Dhama, SMYM Samiti, Pune), randomised controlled trail to determine the efficacy of yoga therapy as compared to the conventional diet and aerobic exercise treatment in the case of obesity (Kaivalya Dhama, SMYM Samiti, Pune), Yoga and bio-feed back for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (department of physiology, AIIMS), uni-nostril yoga breathing and obesity: a study of efficacy and mechanisms (Swami Vivekananda Yoga Research Foundation, Bangalore), a study of the effect of Asanas and Pranayamas on neurological, neuromuscular and cardio-respiratory functions in healthy human volunteers (Department of Physiology, JIPMER Pondicherry), etc are other major works that have been completed.

Dr Murthy informed that in addition to these completed projects, CCRYN is working on 14 other major research programmes where documentation has been attempted for the first time in naturopathy cure also.
