Union government has cancelled the admission of 104 Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani Medical Colleges in the country for the academic year 2008-09 for lack of infrastructure, faculty and poor occupancy of patient beds in the college hospitals.
Of these 29 colleges are from Karnataka. The cancellation comes under the section 13C of the Indian Medical Central Council (IMCC) Act, 1970. The colleges have been banned to conduct the Under graduate and post-graduate courses.
There are around 250 colleges in the country and 57 in Karnataka. At least half the number of colleges in the country and the State are under the de-recognized list. The students who have been admitted in these colleges will have to approach the colleges and seek a refund. In all probability, the college managements are likely to seek a re-permission, stated JSD Pani, president, Mahiti Hakku Jagruiti Vedike, a group of RTI Activists.
In a communiqué to the Central Council Of Indian Medicine, Mahiti Hakku Jagruiti Vedike, pointed out that de-recognition is a regular and annual affair after the admissions are over for the academic year. The effort to de-recognize appears as an eye-wash as the colleges will be allowed to go ahead with an undertaking that they shall comply the requirements by next academic year.
The Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) should recommend to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare that de-recognition should come in much before the admissions. This is because the cancellation of admission is based on poor and deplorable infrastructure and non-existence of faculty. The non-occupancy is a result of no presence of doctors. These factors can be assessed much before the admission to prevent inconvenience to students," informed Pani.
The admission of colleges cancelled in the country are from states of Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Gujarat, Bihar, Punjab, Kerala and Jammu & Kashmir.
