The Confederation of Indian Pharmaceutical Industry (CIPI-ssi), the umbrella organisation of various state level pharmaceutical drug-manufacturing units in the country, has decided to raise funds from its members to realise the first dedicated pharma university in the country planned at Hyderabad.

According to T S Jaishankar, chairman, CIPI, the association is glad to initiate the process of realising a world-class pharma university. He said that the association was looking at an amount of Rs. 2 crores to be mobilised as contribution of the SSI sector from various parts of the country.

“SSI pharma industry will generously contribute to the cause of building a world-class pharmaceutical university. This would amply prove that SSI pharma industry is not only seeking concessions but also contributing for the right cause in the development of the university. This will support the request of Organisation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers (OPM), our major constituent member from Andhra Pradesh,” said Jaishankar.

As reported in Pharmabiz, Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh had announced plans for setting up India's first dedicated University for Pharmaceutical Sciences in Hyderabad, during his inaugural speech at the 57th IPC, held in Hyderabad, last week.

The CM assured allocation of 100 acres of land in the vicinity of the state capital for the purpose and had asked the domestic pharmaceutical industry to come forward with a detailed plan for the university. He committed to bear 50% of the total expenses for setting up the university and urged the industry to pump in the balance amount. He also assured government assistance for the university, which would focus on basic as well as scientific research, for the first five years. The CM had informed the industry that once he gets the details of project from the industry, the proposal would be put through the Cabinet on high priority basis.
