The country's first Desmoplastic Infantile Ganglioglioma has been reported at Apollo Hospital, Tondiarpet, Chennai. Hitherto, 25 such cases have been reported worldwide, two of them in Asia, Japan being the country, ever since the same was discovered by Vanden Berg in the United States in 1987.

This rare brain tumor was reported on Somashree Mukherjee, a 6 month old baby girl. The child had repeated seizures, vomiting, drowsiness and a 'big head'. The first clinical suspicion was a hydrocephalus head but a CT scan report showed an unusual tumour in the brain, according to Dr. D. Balasubramanian, consultant neurosurgeon, at the hospital. According to him, the tumour was not cancerous.

A team of surgeon led by Dr. Balasubramanian comprising Dr. V.G. Ramesh, Dr. Mitra Gosh and Dr. V.S.Mallikarnuna, both pathologist; radiologist. Dr. K.V.N.Ramani and medical superintendent, V. Satyanarayana Rao removed the tumour and then operated on the child after 10 days to remove the fluid that was collecting in the space.

Dr. Balasubramanian maintained that the child has recuperated well and is under constant medical scrutiny. The scrutiny is expected to continue for the next three years. The baby has been administered drugs that will control the fits likely to occur post operatively in cases involving the brain.
