Campaign Against Sex Selective Abortion (CSSA), a non-governmental organisation, has asked the Indian Medical Association (IMA) in particular and the medical fraternity in general to play an active role in halting the declining child sex ratio.
At a "Consultation on role of doctors in halting the declining sex ratio and implementing the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Techniques (Prohibition of Sex) Act" here, the organisation recommended that IMA and medical fraternity should actively participate in implementation of the Act. Dr. Vijalakshmai, Director, (Medical Schemes) and Dr.V. Vasanthi Devi, Chairperson, State Commission for Women attended the consultation.
The meeting recommended centralising the use of 3D and 4D mode of ultrasound machines and amniocentesis in government hospitals in order to prevent possible misuse of such technologies.
Other recommendations included a demand for creation of a common platform by the IMA and Tamil Nadu Medical Council (TNMC) for discussing with the state and other interested groups for the implementation of the PNDT Act.
