The office of the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has issued 471 registration certificates for import of bulk drugs in the country upto May 15. DCGI also issued import registrations for 366 formulations and 130 vaccines during the same period. These clearances were issued along with their manufacturing sites and Indian authorized agents.

In the list of bulk drugs registered for imports, a large number of them like rifampicin, norfloxacin, erythromycin, amoxycillin, theophilline, caffeine, Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, etc. are already being manufactured in India in adequate quantities.

A notable feature of the list of 471 is that import registrations of bulk drugs from China are considerably less as compared to other countries. Many Chinese exporters apparently could not obtain registrations on account of quality considerations. A large number of bulk drug imports have been registered from Italy, Switzerland and Germany. BASF has registered a good number of bulk drugs from Germany, Netherlands and the US.

GSK registered imports mainly from the UK. Bulk drugs have been also registered from countries like Spain, Sweden, Denmark, France Belgium, Slovenia, Hungary, Mexico, Egypt, Thailand and Japan.

As far as registrations for formulation imports are concerned, Baxter India, Roche Scientific, Novo Nordisk, Novartis, Fulford India, Organon, Astra Zeneca, Eli Lilly and GSK figure as leading importers for various injections and tablets. Imports sources for most of these products are Germany, Switzerland, France and the US.
