The number of diabetics in the country may soar close to 55 million by 2025, and Indians are among the most insulin resistant community in the world.

According to Dr.S.N.Narasingan, Secretary of the Association of Physicians of India (API), Chennai Chapter, the alarming increase in the diabetes cases is mainly due to the life style of the people. Cardiac complications like coronary heart disease, cardio myopathy, cardiac autonomic neuropathy and silent ischaemia have become common among the diabetics.

Of this, coronary heart diseases become fatal to many patients, as there is an increasing chance for heart attacks in diabetics, mainly caused by factors like uncontrolled blood sugar level, high blood pressure, smoking, abnormal cholesterol levels, infections caused by bacteria and viruses. Complications caused by non-clotting of blood and infections due to bacteria and viruses are common. Now cardio-diabetology is gaining prominence as a specialty due to the increased cases of diabetic related cardio problems, noted Dr.Narasingan.

He also said the condition of insulin resistance was the most in Indians when compared to other ethnic groups in any part of the world. This situation is characterized by obesity, especially abdominal obesity, with high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Nowadays numerous youngsters are becoming victims of obesity and its induced insulin resistance, mainly caused by over eating, food habits, and lack of physical exercises.
