Dr Azad of DM healthcare bags Pravasi Bhartiya Samman Award

Dr Azad Moopen, founder and chairman, D M Healthcare, and MIMS, a renowned physician-turned-entrepreneur based in UAE received India’s top most honour for overseas Indians – the Pravasi Bhartiya Samman Award. The award was conferred by the president of India, Pratibha Singh Patil on January 9, 2010 at a ceremony held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.

DM Healthcare, founded by Dr Azad Moopen, has been a leader in the Gulf region through its numerous social initiatives aimed at improving healthcare standards and achieving the vision of 'Healthcare for All'. The company announced its ambitious expansion and investment plans in India.

“The award is in many ways a reward to the growing fraternity of DM Healthcare professionals who have manfully strived to bring healthcare experience & expertise with a human touch. There is a big role for the healthcare sector to fulfil the need for quality healthcare at an affordable price. We are committed in delivering both by the establishment of the largest network of neighborhood clinics, pharmacies & hospitals across India and the GCC,” said Dr Azad Moopen.

DM Healthcare will conduct an intensive expansion drive in the country over the next three to five years, by establishing presence in key centres across India- Delhi, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka. Using a two-pronged approach for the expansion exercise, DM Healthcare will seek to acquire mid-sized hospitals, for directed technological up-gradation and expansion, in addition to building new ones. With a large turnover in GCC, and an additional investment of over Rs.1000crores, DM Healthcare is slated to soon become one among the top three players in the Indian healthcare industry.

DM Healthcare, the largest network of healthcare establishments in the GCC for primary to tertiary care, owns a chain of 70 clinics and pharmacies across UAE, Qatar, Oman & Saudi Arabia.

Dr Moopen firmly believes, “In healthcare, profit should be a by-product, and not the goal. It is imperative that medical practitioners and healthcare companies ensure that they reach out to the neediest of the people.” Dr Moopen started the Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) along with like-minded professionals, and is presently a 600-bed super specialty hospital in Kerala serving people with complex ailments who earlier had to travel to far away cities to access treatment. MIMS is the first NABH accredited multi-specialty Hospital in India. MIMS is now adding many satellite hospitals with one at Kottakal that was recently inaugurated. MIMS further reinforces Dr. Moopen’s dedication to the betterment of society. The MIMS Charitable Trust provides free healthcare to over 7000 BPL (below poverty line) from the Vazhayoor village of Mallapuram district, through one of the first corporate-funded rural medical insurance programmes in the country.

MIMS Charitable Trust, under Dr Moopen’s leadership is extending free and subsidized medical treatment to the tune of Rs 50 Lakh a year, to the downtrodden and poor people seeking healthcare treatment. He has set up the MAM Community Dialysis Centre at Vadakkara, in Kerala, to provide free and subsidized dialysis to the under privileged.

Dr Azad Moopen has also dedicated resources in the educational sector by establishing three international schools in Saudi Arabia and plans to start a chain of schools in Kerala. He is a true visionary, believes and states that in the race of excellence there is no finishing line.

Dr Moopen has been in the forefront of many Philanthropic and Social initiatives in India and abroad. He is the founder chairman of Muslim Educational Society (MES), Association of Kerala Medical Graduates (AKMG) and Association of Indian Muslims (AIM) in UAE, which are involved in Educational, Charitable and Socio-Cultural activities.
