Dr Karthik Nagesh of Manipal Hospital gets Fellowship award

Dr N Karthik Nagesh, Consultant Neonatologist, HOD of Neonatology & In-Charge of NICU, Manipal Hospital, Bangalore has been conferred with the prestigious Fellowship award of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, London, UK.

He gets the award in recognition of his “Outstanding dedication and exemplary service done for improving the health of children” and for attainment of a high standard in medical education, training and his commitment to the health and welfare of children.

Professor Terence Stephenson, president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, London bestowed the Fellowship award to Dr  Nagesh.


Accepting the award, Dr N Karthik Nagesh, said, “I am happy to note that my contribution and efforts to improve Neonatal Care in India have been recognized by the prestigious Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health at London. It gives me a great sense of achievement and motivates me to work better towards improving child health in India. Being part of the Manipal Hospital has helped me tremendously in achieving this award. The hospital management has been a great source of inspiration to me to serve better through their immense support and encouragement”.

In spite of working outside the UK, Dr N Karthik Nagesh, is an acclaimed doctor in this field and currently he is the president of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP), Bangalore and was the past president of the National Neonatology Forum of India (Karnataka State).

Being the first Neonatologists in India he has started the highly reputed Neonatal ICU at the Manipal Hospital, Bangalore around 18 and half years back, and has also pioneered neonatal intensive care in the country. He introduced the life saving ‘Surfactant Therapy in premature babies’, at the hospital.

Well known in his academic and clinical work, it was published in more than 60 publications. He has also delivered more than 200 invited lectures in the field of neonatal medicine at the national and state level.

He held the prestigious positions in his 25 years of his paediatric career as the Chairman of the National Task Force on Newborn Screening Guidelines, National Neonatology Forum of India, (NNF), 2009, also affiliated with organizations like NNF and IAP. Besides being an Inspector for Institutional Accreditation for Neonatology, he was a faculty member with UNICEF to conduct Neonatal Ventilation Workshop in Sri Lanka (2008) and also the National Convenor-Neonatal Network Initiative, NNF, 2009.

Dr Karthik holds a MBBS degree from Maulana Azad Medical College, University of Delhi and has trained in Pediatrics from PGIMER, Chandigarh for his MD. He has undergone specialized training in Neonatal Intensive Care in the UK. Later he was trained for High Frequency Ventilation at the Univ. of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City, USA (1997), Nitric Oxide Therapy – Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA (1997), High Frequency Ventilation – Advanced course Utrecht Medical centre, Netherlands, Sept.2006.
