First Vice Chancellor of Tamil Nadu medical varsity passes away

Lalitha Kameswaran, the first woman Director of Medical Education, Tamil Nadu and the first Vice Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University and then the Sri Ramachandra Medical College & Research Institute, is no more. Lalitha who occupied several position during here lifetime died at a private hospital aged 72.

She worked as a Professor of Pharmacology at Madurai and Madras Medical College. She was the first woman to become the Dean of Madras Medical College and was appointed a member of the Planning Commission by the Tamil Nadu government. She obtained her MBBS from Stanley Medical College and her Ph.D. from the University of London.

She is survived by her husband, Padmshree S. Kameswaran, son Dr. Mohan Kameswaran, Director of Madras ENT Research Foundation and daughter Chitra Sankaran.
