Mumbai based L H Hiranandani Hospital, an NABH accredited multi-specialty hospital yesterday operated and implanted Abbott's recently launched bioresorbable vascular scaffold (BVS) on its patient with coronary artery disease (CAD) at the hospital. BVS assists in opening blocked heart vessels and restores the blood flow to the heart.

Unlike metallic stents, BVS dissolves in the body over a period of 18 to 24 months and the blood vessels continue its natural function. The scaffold is made up of polyactide, a polymer derived from corn starch. Dr Ganesh Kumar, chief interventional cardiologist, at the hospital implanted this BVS on a patient.

Giving details, Dr Kumar informed, “The device was implanted on a 45year old man, with a single critical block of 99 per cent in his left anterior descending artery (LAD vessel), the 3x18mm BVS was deployed and the entire procedure lasted not more than 25 minutes.”

Dr Sujit Chatterjee, CEO, Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital further said that with cardiovascular diseases on a rise, technological advancements in this segment would be a relief to many.
