Advanced genetic labs across the globe use different technologies to determine the genetic basis of a particular disease. Newer technologies and platforms help complement the next-generation sequencing technologies to gain a comprehensive and in depth understanding of complex human diseases, according to international experts.

At a symposium hosted by MedGenome along with Imperial Life Sciences, on precision medicine and advances in biomarker research in oncology and prenatal segments, Dr. Charles Cantor, chief scientific officer, Sequenom and Dr. Darryl Irwin, director, applications, Agena Bioscience provided the developments in next generation sequencing. MassARRAY system to analyse somatic mutations, gene fusion detections and genotyping of human DNA for various applications in the clinic were also highlighted. The symposium was attended by researchers and practitioners of next-generation sequencing and proteomics technologies.

Dr. Cantor discussed about various advancements in personalised medicine and how liquid biopsies are being researched to replace conventional chemotherapy and biopsies. In addition, he provided a snap shot on the various sensitive measures under experimentation to continuously monitor cancer patients and decide on drug alternates.

“Technologies are available now that helps in designing content for each patient enabling personalised medicine. For various diseases with high burden in the country such as thalassemia and congenital hearing loss, we should be able to design panels specific to Indian population that could have a huge impact,” said Dr. Darryl Irwin.
