Internationally eminent orthopaedic surgeons perform live surgeries at SRM University in Chennai
Eminent international and Indian orthopaedic surgeons have performed 20 live arthroscopy and arthroplasty surgeries to hone the skills of 150 emerging specialists in the field at the three-day Indo-European conference that was inaugurated at Sri Ramachandra University in Chennai recently.
Eminent orthopaedic surgeons like Dr Prof. Alex Fievez, Dr F D Cushner, Dr Van Ommeren, Dr Jonathan Herald and Dr Taco Gosens conducted the surgeries and explained some of the latest techniques in most complicated procedures.
Inaugurating the conference, Dr Fievez, medical director, Medinova Clinic, Rotterdam said such live surgery conferences have helped improve the skills of Indian orthopaedic surgeons to international levels. He asked them to publish their papers so that more people could benefit from it.
In his keynote address Dr J S N Murthy, vice chancellor, Sri Ramachandra University said minimally invasive surgeries are becoming increasingly popular in many fields and the Indo European Arthroscopy / Arthroplasty Foundation by conducting 10 such live surgery conferences has helped improve the skills of Indian doctors.
Earlier in his welcome address Dr S Arumugam, executive president of IEAAF and Professor and Head, Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine, SRU said that while knee and shoulder minimally invasive surgeries have been in vogue for a decade, hip surgeries are now becoming increasingly popular both in the west and in India. Hip arthroscopy, he said, is a keyhole or minimally invasive surgery done to treat a variety of hip problems like impingement and loose bodies' removal.
The foundation has offered fellowships to six young Indian orthopaedic surgeons for training in Europe, he added.
