Interphex, the world's leading pharmaceutical manufacturing event brand, will debut in India from 13-15, September, 2007, at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Mumbai.

The event will be held concurrently with the Indian Pharmaceutical Association's (IPA) annual convention, and is endorsed by the International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineers (ISPE). Organized by Reed Exhibitions, the largest trade exhibition organizer in the world with more than 420 trades shows annually worldwide, the event comes to India for the first time with the support of Chronicle Pharmabiz, the leading pharma industry magazine in South Asia.

Reed Exhibitions, IPA and Pharmabiz launched the event officially at a function held in Mumbai, last week.

John Stuttard, Reed Exhibitions' vice-president international brand development for Interphex said the event would offer a deserving international platform for the Indian pharmaceutical industry. India is gaining attention of the international pharma community. Already the Indian industry is about $ 9.4 billion as per ESPICOM and is the fourth largest manufacturer in the world in terms of volume, with predictions of $ 13-25 billion turnover by 2010. Annual capital investment in Indian pharma industry is about $ 1.2 billion and gives direct employment to over 4,60,000 people. India makes more than 60,000 formulations and have 270 large and medium scale companies, including 5600 licensed drug makers. The country boasts of the maximum number of US FDA approved plants outside USA, numbering about 100.

Mounting operational costs of pharma companies in the developed world cause companies to look at countries like India, which can produce cost effective quality medicines. The legislative policy changes and improvements made in IPR have made India an attractive destination for the global pharma industry. The India event will cater to the requirements of the Indian and South Asian pharmaceutical industry. It will have international standards and an Indian face, rather than replicating the Interphex shows in the West, said John.

Subodh P Priolkar, president IPA said it was a happy moment for the association to partner with the leading pharmaceutical event brand in the world and bring the latest technology solutions to India for the betterment of the Indian industry. The 2007 convention of IPA will be the first IPA convention to have an international exhibition co-located with the conference. Apart from having brainstorming sessions for imparting latest knowledge to the pharmacists on the happenings in global pharmacy practices, the event will also have buyer-seller meets, he said.

Mike Allsopp, chief operating officer, Reed Exhibitions, India said Reed Elseiver has an annual turnover of over $ 8 billion and Reed Exhibitions contribute about $ 1 billion through the trade shows happening in different parts of the world in about 32 countries. Reed employs about 2300 employees and has 33 offices, which co-promote all its events. Interphex was started in 1975 in U.K. followed by Interphex USA in 1980. Interphex Japan, Singapore, Puerto Rico, Mexico and China are the other Interphex brands. These seven dedicated events attract over 3400 exhibitors and 97000 business visitors.
