The 57th Annual Congress of the Indian Radiological and Imagining Association (IRIA), which was held in Hyderabad from 8-11 January, has made several recommendations.

They include-

Getting the minimum and necessary radiology investigations done at an affordable cost, being wary of unqualified radiologists, discouraging quackery by training non-radiologists, following a healthy professional practice, private health providers arranging mobile radiology vans and serving the rural areas.

To fight against wrong rulings of PNDT act and not allow the registration of technicians and medical graduates from other disciplines, providing cost-effective indigenous battery operated radiology equipments, the government must allocate budgets for such mobile diagnostic radiology vans and further reduce customs duty on medical equipments.

As teaching is not uniform all over the country, the IRIA recommended zonal resident training programmes in all the zones of the country for one-week, which would include hands-on practice. This will help produce quality radiologists.

Some other recommendations included organizing more CMEs under the banner of the Indian College of Radiology and Imaging (ICRI). Advanced certificate course of minimum four weeks to train and update post graduates in different modalities like conventional radiology, Ultrasound, CT, MRI, and Interventional Radiology.

To start two-year diploma courses through ICRI at recognized institutions, manned by qualified senior radiologists. The College of IRIA will hold entrance examinations in different zones and will be the examining body for such diplomas.
