Karn'taka govt to spruce up infrastructure of 6 new medical colleges unapproved by MCI
Karnataka government is making efforts to improve the infrastructure and staffing in the six proposed medical colleges by August end to comply with the standards laid down by the Medical Council of India (MCI). The action comes after the representatives of the MCI who inspected the colleges in September 2005, were unhappy over the compliance to approve the colleges to admit the students.
The state government is taking up the task of ensuring the required infrastructure in colleges coming up in Bidar, Belgaum, Hassan and Mandya, Raichur to meet the demand for the first year MBBS course. Also the staffing needs of the colleges are being met, Dr VS Acharaya, minister for medical education, government of Karnataka, told Pharmabiz.
"We are working day and night to ensure that the project is completed," Dr Acharaya said. The MCI had made several small observations with regards to the six new medical colleges. The state government is expected to communicate by June 25 to the MCI that all the colleges would be complied for clearance during the next visit of the officials of the MCI.
Delving into the issue of seat matrix and the fee structure, the medical education minister stated that the fee structure had been decided for admission to professional courses and two committees were still debating the matter. He added that it would be formatted in a such a way that it favoured students from the State.
The minister for medical education also lauded the efforts of the Union government which had decided to get a grant of Rs 100 crore for the development of Bangalore Medical College. We will develop the Bangalore Medical College in to a world class facility, he said.
