Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, the premier cancer care centre in the state is back to normal after the 1500 employees returned to work after the government of Karnataka sanctioned Rs.2 crore as additional fund.

Since the government has met the striking employees’ demand partially, the hospital services have been resumed, although the strike saw two deaths of patients who were in their advanced stages of stomach cancer.

The hospital’s two peripheral centres in Mandya and Gulbarga have also resumed services and all the three centres are now attending to the emergency cases on top priority.

Dr PS Prabhakaran, director Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology said that to run the hospital more funds are required. Although Kidwai receives a central government grant to procure drugs, annually the state government provides Rs.8 crore and the hospital collection is around Rs.6 crore. But we need an additional Rs.6 crore to meet our expenses.
