Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), a 450-bed multi-speciality hospital, in Thiruvanamthapuram, has announced that it is going to offer a two-year post-graduate training programme in emergency medicine for resident and qualified doctors.

"The Ronald Regan institute of emergency medicine of the George Washington University Medical Centre in Washington DC will offer the curriculum for the two year course. MBBS graduates are the eligible candidates for joining the course", Dr Sreehari, co-coordinator of the programme told Pharmabiz

The doctor said in India this segment of the medical science is in the developing stage and there are no proper courses or training in Kerala at present. Each and every corporate hospital in the country is now experiencing shortage of trained doctors of this category.

The training program will help to extend international standard and quality emergency care in the State with the involvement of the foreign agencies.

The course includes twenty-four modules like trauma, cardiology, neurology, paediatrics etc. The faculty from the US based Ronald Regan institute of emergency medicine will train the participants for six days in every Month. Faculties from other universities in India and also from abroad will visit the Institute as guest trainers, the co-coordinator said.

Since KIMS has a strong faculty comprising from all the spheres of health care management including the DNB (Diplomat of National Board) programs, the procedure of the course will be smooth and comprehensive. The trainees will be assigned the charge of each department of the hospital, he said.

According to hospital sources, on completion of this course, the members of the program will be able to do practice in the eastern and western part of the globe. But the American University doesn't offer any campus selection or promise placements in their institutes in the States, he said.

KIMS is the first venture of KIMS Health Care Management Limited, a public limited company commissioned in the year 2002.
