The vacation bench of the Madras High Court has issued notices on two public interest litigations (PILs) filed by a non-government organisation (NGO), which prayed for a direction to declare the proposed indefinite strike by the Tamil Nadu government doctors as illegal. The PILs were filed by Rajasekhar of All Living Beings and Environmental Protection Society, Mayiladuthurai.

The notices, which were issued to the state government and various employees unions and the Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association (TNGDA), are returnable in a week's time. The hearing on the petition would be held during the next sitting of the vacation court on May 20.

Hearing the PILs, Justice N Dinakar and Justice A K Rajan also suo motu took notice of newspaper reports about a patient dying in the government hospital at Madurai and sought a report about it.

The accident victim, admitted to the hospital on the night of May 11, had died as the striking doctors allegedly refused to attend on him.
