MaxCure Hospital performs rare heart surgery to save life of woman with right side heart

A team of doctors from MaxCure Hospital in Hyderabad had performed a rare cardiac surgery by flipping the heart from the right chest to the left by transposing the great arteries and corrected the two leaking valves.

Usually human heart is located in the left side of the chest. However here this is a case of a patient having heart  located on the right side and having a congenital heart problem with two of its valves dysfunctioning.

Taking it a challenge, a team of doctors lead by Dr. Pramod Reddy, Chief Cardiothoracic Surgeon of MaxCure Hospital have successfully performed a rare complex cardiac surgery and gave a new lease of life to the 37 year old patient named Rekha Durga.

According to Dr. Pramod Reddy, the patient who had complained of palpitating pain and breathlessness had undergone detailed investigations. Upon admitted to the hospital the patient was investigated and diagnosed by conducting various tests like ECG, chest x-ray and echocardiogram and found that the patient’s heart is on the right side which is referred to as Dextrocardia in medical terms. Moreover she was also suffering from a complex heart disease with two of her heart’s Valve leaking, which is termed as Tricuspid Valve Stenosis with regurgitation, Mitral valve regurgitation.

While talking about rare surgery Dr. Pramod Reddy, said, “This is a very rare case. The patient has a heart on the right side. Also, she had a complex heart disease which is less than 1 per cent of all congenital heart diseases. Out of which only 20 per cent of them have a heart on the right side. We managed to correct it with a surgery in which one valve is replaced and other is repaired. As the anatomy and orientation is complex, her operation is performed by flipping the heart on the left side. The patient is discharged in 5 days and she is very healthy now.”

The Patient Rekha Durga thanked the team of doctors who have brought her back to normal with in just 5 days of surgery.

Apart from Dr. Pramod, others who took part in assisting the complex surgery include Dr. Amar, Consultant Anaesthesiologists and Dr. Yoganand, Cardiac surgeon.
