Maxx Medical Pvt. Ltd., a global medical device company with USA-based research and manufacturing facilities, has launched the Freedom Total Knee System, a high-flexion knee replacement system, that has been specifically engineered to address the unmet market need for smaller sized and differently proportioned implants to support the Indian lifestyle. Freedom Knee is US FDA approved and will be available all across the country.
Dr N.S.Laud launched this knee system with the renowned joint replacement surgeons Dr Nilen Shah and Dr Harish Bhende from Mumbai, Dr Hemant Wakankar and Dr Narendra Vaidya from Pune, Dr Haresh Bhalodia from Ahmedabad, designer surgeon Dr Asit Shah from USA, together with company officials gathered at the Taj Mahal Palace and Hotel to mark the country-wide rollout of the Freedom Knee and to share their first-hand experiences with the product.
Freedom Knee supports the deep knee bending and range of motion needs of patients, including running, biking, transitioning from squatting to standing, and sitting on the floor cross-legged. This features the only known all-poly tibial component specifically designed for high flexion and bears approval of US FDA, Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), and CE Mark.
It also enables surgeons to preserve more bone stock, which better supports patients’ long-term mobility. In some cases, surgeons are able to conserve 50 per cent more bone stock than with other contemporary systems, an advantage that is particularly useful for the Asian population.
It is a primary knee replacement system developed collaboratively by leading orthopaedic and biomedical design experts featuring all of the options surgeons want to help their patients needing a knee replacement. It has quickly been dubbed the “Asian Knee” by surgeons and patients throughout the country.
“Long survival of any joint implant needs good anthropometric analysis based on the target population, and the implant design should take these specific anatomical differences in to consideration. Though the designer surgeon of the Freedom Knee, Dr Asit Shah, was born in the USA and educated at Harvard Medical School, his commitment and involvement in developing the knee implant for the specific anatomical needs of Indian/Asian patients has resulted in the Freedom Knee,” said Professor Dr N.S.Laud of Mumbai. “In addition, the simple and efficient design of the system instruments helps surgeons obtain the best fit for their patients with minimum bone resection.”
On the occasion Ashesh Shah, president and CEO, Maxx Medical said, “At Maxx Medical we continuously strive towards providing best solutions as per the needs of our patients. We are delighted to launch this unique knee joint replacement system which will give the Indian patients freedom of movement” and further added,” It is important for people suffering from osteoarthritis to know that there is an option available for them that has been developed according to their lifestyle and anatomy. Patients no longer have to compromise with retro-fit systems. Freedom Knee gives them an opportunity to get back to the life they enjoyed earlier”.
Dr Nilen Shah, renowned orthopaedic surgeon from Mumbai said, “Patients in India, especially women with arthritis have smaller joints as compared to their western counterparts and require flexible knee movement. Freedom Knee is manufactured as per the USA standards and comes in a multitude of small sizes with high flexion to address this requirement”. Dr Hemant Wakankar from Pune expressed his similar views “The Freedom Knee prostheses is the next logical advancement that will greatly benefit Asian patients with arthritis as it is developed keeping Asian knee dimensions in mind.”
“I was particularly impressed with the high flexion results of Freedom Knee. This is especially important as Freedom Knee implant is able to achieve the much needed High Flexion with significant bone conservation” added Dr. Harish Bhende of Mumbai.
