The Medical Council of India (MCI) has recommended to the Union Health Ministry for issue of letter of permission to the Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for admitting students to its MBBS courses from the next academic session. According to a press communique from Madras Medical Mission (MMM), Chennai, which set up this medical college in Pondicherry early this year, the MCI letter has been sent to the Union Health Ministry for permission to admit students from the next academic session.

PIMS is the first medical college set up by MMM, which is a renowned institute in cardiac care. Set up on a 30-acre campus with buildings on 3.25 lakh sq ft at Kalapet, PIMS has a 310-bed multi speciality hospital with a 24-hour trauma care facility. The infrastructure includes lecture theatres, multimedia facilities, an internet enabled and well stocked library and separate hostels for men and women, according to the press communique, which also stated that the admission to the medical college would begin next year, if clearances come through, under the single window scheme as is prevailing currently.
