Narmada Kidney Foundation in association with Global Hospitals felicitates organ donors
Narmada Kidney Foundation, a non-government organization aiming to help people with kidney disease in association with Global Hospitals, a multi superspecialty tertiary care hospital, celebrated its 20th anniversary of Organ Donors Day by felicitating 40 compassionate organ donors and family members of cadaver donors in the presence of Dr. Pravin Shingare, Director of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Dr. S. Mathur, Secretary, Zonal Transplant Co-ordination Committee (ZTCC), Hyder Ali, Film actor, Dr. Uma Ali, Head of pediatric nephrology at Wadia and Lilavati hospital and Rupal Kanakia, educationist.
Narmada Kidney Foundation is the first registered Non-Governmental Organization in the country to bring up the concept of celebrating Organ Donors Day.
Several patients with end stage organ diseases end up losing their lives as there are not enough organ donors available in our country. According to WHO, only about 0.01 percent of people in India donate their organs after death as compared to western countries, where around 70-80 percent of people pledge their organs. Also, around 5,00,000 people in India die every year waiting for an organ donor.
The theme for this year’s Organ Donors Day by Narmada Kidney Foundation was "Agar Tum Na Hote"; which emphasizes on giving the gift of life through organ donation. Organ recipients expressed their gratitude to the donors by performing musical programs and skits.
Taking this into consideration, Narmada Kidney Foundation in Association with Global Hospitals is trying to create awareness among people on the need and importance of organ donation and the procedures involved through various initiatives like organizing short film competition to create awareness about organ donation after death, celebrating Organ Donors Day and hosting National Transplant games in which transplant patients and their donors participate.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Bharat Shah, Founder, Narmada Kidney Foundation & Nephrologist, Global Hospitals said, “It is an honour for us at Narmada Kidney Foundation to felicitate the spirit of organ donors and their families. From the time we started this annual programme in 1997 till today, our endeavour has always been to empower, encourage and create awareness among people on the need of organ donation; so that we can save several precious lives waiting for organs. We would also like to extend our regards to Global Hospitals and other NGOs for collaborating with us for this noble cause. We have observed an increase in the number of cadaver organ donors to 53 in 2016 from 42 last year. Through our constant efforts, we aim to enlighten as many people as possible to come forward and join us in the organ donation drive”
