NIPER faculty nominated for Ranbaxy Research Award

Prof. Asit Kumar Chakraborti, Head, Department of Medicinal Chemistry, National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Punjab, has been selected for Ranbaxy Research Award 2004 in the field of “Pharmaceutical Sciences.”

The award will be presented to Prof. Chakraborti by Nobel Laureate Prof. R. Zinkernagel, Institute of Experimental Immunology, Switzerland at a special presentation function to be held on November 28, 2005 at ICGEB, New Delhi.

Prof. Chakraboti joined NIPER in 1994 since its inception as a core faculty member and has been instrumental in development of the Department of Medicinal, said a NIPER release.

He has developed several organic reaction methodologies and new concepts such as demand based thiolate anion generation, dual activation strategy, atom economic methylation etc. and applied them for the synthesis of new chemical entities for new target based drug design in parasitic, common obstructive pulmonary and inflammatory diseases. He has developed various eco-friendly catalysts and processes that are useful for the synthesis of various cardiovascular drugs and their intermediates.
