Nomos Corporation has received FDA 510(k) clearance to market its new patient positioning system, called Auto-Crane. An accessory to powered radiation therapy treatment support assemblies, Auto-Crane verifies and describes setup of the treatment couch/patient during a radiation therapy treatment and represents an enhancement to the manually operated Nomos Crane II, which has been installed at approximately 45 treating sites on five different OEM treatment table models.

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), using the Company's Peacock System, is accomplished by treating the patient with discrete slices of radiation. The couch/patient must be indexed by the radiation slice thickness, known as the indexing factor of the linear accelerator. With sub-millimeter accuracy, the Auto-Crane provides an automated method for accurately indexing the position of the couch/patient during a radiation therapy treatment. All table indexing operations can be performed remotely via a user interface located at the linear accelerator control station. The system also continuously monitors the couch position and will interrupt treatment if couch position changes.

John W. Manzetti, President and Chief Executive Officer of Nomos Corporation, said, "Nomos is the pioneer of IMRT and the recognized leader in technological advances currently moving the industry forward. FDA clearance of Auto-Crane provides our customers, and the patients they treat, with yet another weapon that maximizes clinical quality and efficiency in the battle against cancer."
