National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has announced major price cuts/ fixation for seven bulk drugs / bulk drug derivatives. The drugs are Frusemide, Ranitidine HCl, Trimethoprim, Ephedrine HCl, Pseudo-Ephedrine HCl, Cephazoline Sodium (Sterile), and Famotidine. The prices have been revised with the data generated by NPPA as it failed to collate comprehensive information on the price trends from major bulk manufacturers of these products.
As per the revised prices Frusemide is to cost Rs 345 less per kilo. The cost reduction in the case of other drugs are Ranitidine HCl (355), Trimethoprim (165), Ephedrine HCl (117), Pseudo-Ephedrine HCl (62), Cephazoline Sodium (Sterile) (3735) and Famotidine (110).
There are more than 30 companies who are into the manufacture of frusemide. The number ranitidine manufacturers would come to 40. This includes pharma majors like Dr Reddys, Nicholas Piramal India Limited, Ranbaxy Laboratories, Torrent Pharmaceuticals, Neuland Laboratories etc. The number of companies who are manufacturing other bulk drugs are Ephedrine (43) and Famotidine (23).
The revised notified prices shall become effective within 15 days from the date of notification in the Official Gazette. All the manufacturers of the formulations utilizing the drug in their scheduled formulations are advised to follow the provisions of DPCO, 1995 with regard to pricing of the derivative formulations.
