The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), in coordination with the police and other law enforcement agencies, has seized heroin worth over Rs.13 crore in two separate incidents in Chennai.
Based on a tip off from informers, the officials seized about 10 kilogram of heroin at Maduranthakam near Thanjavur from a truck bound to Tuticorin from Chennai. The officials found two bags of five kilogram each heroin in the truck, and arrested three persons in this connection.
They admitted the drug was being smuggled from Rajasthan to Chennai, a Sri Lankan national financed it, and were trafficking the drug to Sri Lanka from Tuticorin. Sources said the drug bags were concealed under scrap iron weighing over 10 tonnes and 30-kilogram odd thermacol.
In another incident, the officials arrested two passengers of Chennai bound Navjivan Express train from Vadodara. They were found to be carrying three kilograms of the drug in a bag.
Officials said related to this, a Sri Lankan national named Mohammed Shammen, a top gun in drug trafficking from India and wanted in several other cases, was arrested by the Sri Lankan authorities there. He is suspected to have smuggled over 400 kilograms of drugs, and was the kingpin in orchestrating narcotics trafficking from south India to Sri Lanka.
