Posters emphasizing the need to take good care of patients suffering from cerebral palsy had been launched by Governor Dr C Rangarajan, at Raj Bhavan, Hyderabad, on Thursday. The posters were brought out by Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) and the Indian Family of Cerebral Palsy (IFCP) in order to create public awareness about the disease.
Releasing the posters, the Governor said there was need to take care of infants, children and even the adults who suffer from the disease arising from brain damage due to premature birth, delayed birth and severe jaundice. The disease results in lack of coordination of the limbs, lack of development of the limbs and also vision and hearing impairments. NIMS Director Dr Kakarla Subba Rao and IFCP vice-president Kushal Chand Singhvi were also present at the release of the poster.
Explaining the seriousness of the disease depicted on the poster, NIMS neuro-surgeon Dr A K Purohit said there was need for greater awareness about the disease. He said the disease was a multi-variant, multi-causative, often changing the physical disability of the child and was associated with many other disabilities. It was very important that this disease was treated
during the first few years of life to reduce complications. The NIMS and IFCP had seen over 25,000 cases over the last 14 years, the average age of patients being seven years.
