Ranbaxy Laboratories and Dr Reddy's Lab are the top two patent applicants in the area of drugs and pharmaceuticals from the developing countries during 2002, according to World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) statistics. While Ranbaxy Laboratories has filed 64 applications for new patents, DRL has 19 and followed by Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Ltd with 16 and Biocon India with 10 applications during the year.
According to latest information from the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) statistics, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has filed 184 patent applications, the highest number of patent applications in the overall category from the developing countries in the year 2002.
During the period, India registered the highest growth rate of 51.9 per cent among the major patent applicants in the developing world. India with 480 applications stands third after Republic of Korea (2552) and China (1124) among the patent filing nations from the developing countries under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), according to WIPO statistics.
